Stripe surcharging ends for Australian customers from 1 October 2026

Overview:

  • Understand why Stripe surcharging is ending in Australia on 1 October 2026.
  • Set up surcharging correctly if you still need it before that date.
  • Know what changes automatically from 1 October 2026, and what to expect on your Stripe Setup page.

What changes from 1 October 2026

No surcharge is applied to any payment made on or after 1 October 2026, regardless of when the invoice was raised or how your Charge Stripe Fee to Customer setting is configured. This is enforced automatically. You don't need to change any settings for it to take effect.

What you'll see on the Wiise Stripe Setup page depends on your Wiise version:

  • Version 28.5 or later: The Charge Stripe Fee to Customer toggle and Stripe Fee Description field are hidden from the page entirely.
  • Earlier than version 28.5: These fields stay visible, and the toggle may still show as on. This is cosmetic only and no surcharge is applied, regardless of what the toggle shows.

Note: The first time you upgrade to 28.5 or later, the toggle is automatically corrected to off.

Note: If your Stripe Setup page still shows the surcharge toggle after 1 October 2026, it means you're on a version earlier than 28.5. It doesn't mean surcharging is still active — no surcharge will be collected from your customers. Upgrading to 28.5 or later hides these fields and corrects the toggle for you.

Turn off surcharging yourself

If you'd rather not wait for the fields to be hidden or corrected automatically, you can turn surcharging off at any time:

  1. Search for Wiise Stripe Setup on the top right-hand corner of the page and select the related link.
  2. In the Invoice Settings section, turn off the Charge Stripe Fee to Customer toggle.
  3. Clear the Stripe Fee Description field if you no longer need it.

What happens to invoices raised before 1 October 2026

The change applies based on when your customer pays, not when you issued the invoice. If you raise an invoice with a surcharge before 1 October 2026 but your customer pays it on or after that date, the surcharge is no longer allowed and Wiise won't apply it.

Note: The surcharge amount may still display on an invoice raised before 1 October 2026 if your customer views it before paying. If they pay on or after 1 October 2026, the amount actually charged won't include the surcharge, even if the invoice document shows it.

What's next

You might want to:

  • Review your pricing to account for Stripe's processing fee, since you can no longer pass it on as a surcharge.
  • Find out how to post your Stripe Cash Receipts Journal.
